Axiomatic Design

Axiomatic Design is an emerging methodology that is critical to an effective DFSS process. It provides a means to maximize functional performance through identifying and reducing 'conceptual vulnerability' and 'system complexity' while maximizing functional capability. At the core of the Axiomatic Design method are the 2 axioms... Axiom 1: The Independence Axiom and Axiom 2: The Information Axiom.

The training and use of Axiomatic Design has been a challenge until recently when the method was expanded for application and integration purposes to what is known as the "Axiomatic Quality" method of Dr. Basem El-Haik. This approach integrates with great incremental value the use of Axiomatic Design, Robust Design, and the entire Design-For-Six-Sigma process.

The fundamentals of the Axiomatic Quality approach emphasize the reduction of Conceptual Vulnerabilities by integrating the design principles and analysis to identify the state of the conceptual design as either uncoupled, decoupled, or coupled. This sets the stage for design modifications that will optimize complex systems at the conceptual level and provide the appropriate framework for Robust Design optimization (appropriate scope of optimization studies and sequence). Operational Vulnerabilities are then managed through the applied use of Robust Design. Axiomatic Quality also provides the appropriate framework for the application of TRIZ. The TRIZ method is used in a focused way to eliminate all possible examples of design coupling that are identified. Axiomatic Design further provides the necessary sequence (priority) among system elements for which both TRIZ and Robust Design should be applied.

The zigzagging method of mapping is utilized by the engineering team to develop the required design matrices and system hierarchy. A more formal mathematical mapping is also possible.
